Sarvam, an Indian AI startup backed by Lightspeed and Khosla Ventures, has launched a 105-billion parameter open-source AI model targeting the Indian market. This move positions Sarvam as a challenger to global AI leaders such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
The startup has raised over $50 million and holds a valuation of around $200 million, which, while significant, remains much smaller compared to OpenAI's estimated $500 billion valuation.
Sarvam plans to release its models as open-source, though it has yet to confirm whether the training data or underlying code will be included in the release. This strategy aims to foster local AI innovation and accessibility in India.
The launch marks a significant development in AI enterprise competition, introducing large-scale AI capabilities centered on India’s linguistic and cultural context and contributing to a more diversified global AI ecosystem.
