Nvidia is in discussions to invest up to $30 billion in OpenAI, potentially valuing the artificial intelligence startup at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, CNBC has confirmed.

This planned investment is distinct from the $100 billion infrastructure agreement announced in September between Nvidia and OpenAI, which involved Nvidia providing supercomputing capacity as new facilities came online.

A source indicated the $30 billion investment is not contingent on deployment milestones and could be spread over several years with flexibility on timing and amount.

The deal is still under negotiation and subject to change, amid recent questions about the status of the original infrastructure pact, which reports have suggested was paused earlier this year.
